Yarn out of old T-Shirts! (photo tutorial)

Who doesn't LOVE free crafting material...am I right? And even better...who doesn't LOVE free crafting material that they made themselves...for FREE! Can I get an Amen!

No really though...you know how sometimes you are just itching for something to do, or an easy project with that chunky yarn that is just oh so comfy and nice...well, this simple tutorial i found will show you exactly how to do it, honestly it takes like...half an hour and you can crank out a bunch of this stuff...BEWARE...its highly addicting...!

No pero enserio...sabes como aveces ya te anda por hacer algo, o un proyecto facil con estambre de ese grueso y muy bonito...bueno esto te va a mostrar exactamente como se hace, es super facil y rapido...pero cuidado! Es muuuy adictivo!

So what you'll need are one or two (or more) old tshirts, scissors, a pencil (or chalk, or anything to trace lines on the shirt with) and optionally a measuring tape.
Now...the measuring tape part is really optional, it depends on how OCD you are (jk!!)

Lo que vas a necesitar son una o dos (o mas) camisetas, unas tijeras, un lapiz (o algo para trazar en la tela) y una cinta de medir opcional.
La cinta de medir es realmente opcional, depende de que tan perfeccionista seas (era broma!)

So I started out with one of my hubby's old shirts, a pair of scissors (these ones are not sharp at all but for now they are the only ones I have so they will just have to do!) and a measuring tape just to be safe.

Empeze con una camiseta vieja de mi marido, un par de tijeras ( que no son para nada filosas pero como son las unicas que tengo me tendran que servir por ahora!) Y una cinta de medir solo para estar segura.
 
Once you have your material, start by cutting just below the graphic, on shirts without graphics you can make your cut a bit higher (just below where the sleeves start) so you have more material; and you'll want to cut the hem so you don't have to deal with that annoying seam!

Una vez que tengas tu material, empieza por cortar abajito del dibujo, en camisetas sin dibujo puedes empezar a cortar un poco mas arriba (justo abajo de las mangas) para que tengas mas material; y tambien vas a cortar la bastilla de abajo para que no tengas que batallar con ella despues!

After doing this you are going to flip the shirt so that the sides are vertical, then fold it almost in half, leave about an inch at the top so that you get that nice long piece of yarn at the end.

Despues de hacer esto, vas a darle vuelta a la camiseta para que los lados queden verticales, y luego doblalo, pero asegurate de dejar unos dos centimetros arriba para que al final te quede una tira larga en vez de muchas tiras chicas.
 

At this point you could technically just start cutting long strips, which is what I started doing, then realized that it was waaaay to crooked for my taste...
So I decided it would make things easier to draw lines about 1.5 - 2 inches apart (or the size of a measuring tape) all the way up to where the material is folded.

Tecnicamente podrias empezar a cortar tiras largas, que es lo que yo empeze a hacer, y luego me di cuenta que iba demasiado chueco para mi gusto...
Asi que decidi que seria mas facil si trazaba unas lineas de unos 3-5 centimetros (o lo ancho de una cinta de medir) hasta donde estaba el doblez de la tela.
 

Better right? yes... Ok so now I assume you know what to do...no? Well you finish cutting of course...seriously! (hehehe)
Once you finish cutting the strips, unfold the material and try to get the uncut part as flat as you can, when you are done it should look something like this (if it's uneven don't stress about it, one of the great things about this project is that it isn't super strict!).

Mejor verdad? Si...Ok ahora supongo que sabes que hacer...no? Pues termina de cortar! Una vez que termines de cortar las tiras, desdobla el material y trata de que la parte sin cortar te quede lo mas plano posible, cuando termines deberia de verse algo asi (si esta chueco no te estreses, una de las mejores cosas de este proyecto es que no es super estricto!).

So once you have your material set up like in the photo just above ^^ you can start making diagonal cuts (second strand to third strand and so on).

Una vez que tengas tu tela lista como en la foto de arriba ^^ puedes empezar a cortar diagonalmente (de la segunda tira a la tercera y asi sucesivamente).

At the end you'll find that you have the two pieces at the end still attached so just snip those diagonally as well and then you'll have one long strand of fabric, if you don't it means you made a wrong cut at some point, but there is nothing to worry about, you can tie it on to the long piece once it's done!
So, you have this great big long piece of fabric, now all you do is take short strands and pull...yes...I said pull, but be careful! Don't pull to hard or the material could break...it happened to me on my first try and I ended up with a gazillion little pieces I had to tie together...Ok so maybe I'm exaggerating a little bit...but I did have to tie a bunch together!
Once you've pulled your way to the end of your strand, you should end up with something like this:

Al final tendras dos pedazos a los extremos que estan todavia agarrados asi que solo corta esos diagonalmente tambien para que te quede una tira larga de tela, si te quedan mas pedazos significa que hiciste un mal corte en algun lado, pero no te preocupes, puedes atarlo ya que termines!
Asi que, tienes esta tira larga de tela, ahora todo lo que tienes que hacer es ir agarrando de poco a poco y jalarlo...si...dije jalarlo, per ten cuidado! No jales demasiado fuerte porque el material puede romperse...a mi me paso la primera vez que hice esto y termine con millones de pedacitos...ok tal vez exagero un poco...pero si tuve que atar bastantes pedazos!
 Una vez que jales toda la tela, deberias de tener algo asi:

If you did, COGNRATZ! You have just made some tshirt yarn! Make some more so you are ready for the next tutorial! I'll be attempting a rounded rug out of this stuff!

Si lo hiciste FELICIDADES! Acabas de hacer estambre de camiseta! Haz mas para que estes list@ para el siguiente proyecto! Estare intentando de hacer un tapete redondo de este material!
 
P.S.
Of course you might want to roll it in to a nice little ball so that it's tidy and can be kept with the rest of your crafting supplies until you find out what the heck to do with it!!

Claro que alomejor quieres armar una bolita para que sea menos cochinero y puedas guardarlo con el resto de tu material hasta que encuentres algo que hacer con el!!

T~Shirt Restyle #1 (photo tutorial)

How many of us have seen these awesome DIY tutorials that say they are super easy, and then when you go to do one, it turns out you need to go to the store for this, that and the other... OR it requires certain skills that many of us just don't have!!

~ Cuantos de nosotros hemos visto esos proyectos de "hazlo tu mismo" que dicen que estan super faciles y a la hora que los quieres hacer, te salen con que ocupas esto y aquello...O que requiere ciertas habilidades que ps...muchos de nosotros no tenemos!!

So, what I've set out to do on this particular blog is to take inspiration from these DIY's and turn them in to something that anyone...yes I said ANYONE, can do from home without splurging on materials or tools!

~ Asi que, lo que quiero hacer en este blog, es agarrar inspiracion de estos proyectos y convertirlos en algo que todos....si, dije TODOS, podamos hacer en la comodidad de nuestras casas, sin tener que gastar un dineral en materiales o herramientas!

The first tutorial I'll do is something I have been seeing around a ton, and if you are the kind of person that likes to recycle, reuse and restyle stuff, you will LOVE it!

This is a no sew project and it took me about an hour and a half (yeah you try doing this with a 2 year old hanging around your neck!) to finish it and I ended up wearing it today to my friends house...now I have to make one for her...

~ El primer proyecto que vamos a hacer es algo que se ha visto mucho por el internet ultimamente, y si eres el tipo de persona que le gusta reciclar, reusar y darle un nuevo estilo a las cosas, te va a ENCANTAR!

Este proyecto no necesita coserse y a mi me tomo alrededor de una hora y media (oye! Tu trata de hacerlo con un bebe de 24 meses colgandose de tu cuello!) para terminarlo y me lo puse para ir a casa de una amiga...y ahora tengo que hacerle una a ella...

Now...I know everyone has at least 1 or 2 old large t-shirts laying around the house, if not you can also steal one from your dad/brother/boyfriend!!  This particular restyle is great for anything, weather you are going clubbing and want to pair it with a cute pair of skinny jeans and heel's or you are dressing it down for a random day with shorts and flip flops, it's comfy, it's awesome aaaaand the best thing is....if you need to loosen or tighten it...you just undo and re do the knots!!!

~ Ahora...todos tenemos al menos uno o dos camisetas grandisimas y viejas tiradas por la casa, si no tienes, puedes robarle una a tu papa/hermano/novio!! Este proyecto es buenisimo para todo, sea que vallas de antro o te lo quieras poner en un dia cualquiera, esta comodo y se ve super padre...y lo mejor es que si necesitas cambiarle un poquito de talla, solo desatalo y hazlo de nuevo!

The materials you will need are:
~ A large Tshirt
~ Scissors
~ Chalk/pencil/pen or something easy to wash that will write on fabric (this isn't necessary but it does help a TON when getting the shape right!)
~ ruler/measuring tape (optional)

~ Materiales que vas a necesitar:

 ~ Una camiseta grande, no importa que sea vieja

 ~ Tijeras

 ~Gis/ lapiz/ pluma o algo que se lave facilmente que sirva para escribir en la tela (esto no es necesario pero si te facilita muchisimo a la hora de querer darle forma!)

 ~ una regla o cinta de medir ( Opcional)

Here we go!!

So the first thing is to find a nice flat surface, for me the floor works just perfectly, then I can spread my stuff out so I know where it is at all time...of course it ends up getting lost anyway but oh well xD
Make sure the tshirt is nice and flat on your work surface, like so:

~ Lo primero que vas a necesitar es una superficie plana, a mi me funciona perfecto el piso, y asi puedo esparcir todo lo que necesito para que no se me pierda...claro que termina perdiendose de todos modos pero ni modo!

Asegurate que la camiseta quede bien plana en tu lugar de trabajo, asi como en la foto:

Then you can choose if you are going to use some kind of chalk or pencil to mark where you want to make your cuts, if not just go ahead and cut the sleeves.

~Luego puedes escojer si vas a usar algo para marcar donde quieres hacer los cortes, si no decides usarlo, solo corta las mangas.

If you want to make the shirt a little shorter this would be the time to cut it to the length you want as well, I went for just cutting off the hem of the shirt and left it long...bear in mind that once you tie the sides it'll be shorter!

 After you cut the sleeves and the hem you want to grab that drawing tool (chalk, pencil, pen, crayon, etc) and mark the shape you want your shirt to be. I used my fav tshirt and drew around it just to get the size right.

~ Si quieres hacer la camiseta un poco mas corta, este seria el momento de cortarlo hasta que quede del largo deseado. Yo solo le corte la bastilla y lo deje largo...ten en mente que una vez que haces los nudos a los lados se hara mas corta!

Despues de cortar las mangas y la bastilla, agarra tu lapiz (o lo que estes usando para dibujar) y marca la forma que quieres que sea la camiseta terminada. Yo use mi camiseta favorita y dibuje alrededor de ella.

Then it's time to start cutting strips, and you can mark the strips to get a good idea of how long and wide they will be, I did mine at 2 inches each and just cut to where the shape of the finished shirt starts and at the end it will look something like this:

~Ya es hora de empezar a cortar las tiras, puedes marcar las tiras para que te des una idea de lo largo y ancho que van a quedar, yo traze los mios de dos pulgadas (alrededor de 4 centimetros) y corte hasta el borde de la figura que dibuje, al final se vera algo parecido a esto:

After cutting up both sides, I decided to cut the neck off to make a shoulderless top but I didn't take a picture of that...I'm sure you know how to cut the neck off tho! Just make sure you don't cut too much off because it'll slide down your shoulders and you'll end up showing a lot more skin than intended!!

Then, I decided that instead of weaving the strands in (because it shows way to much skin for my taste, and it's a lot harder) I would just cut and tie the strands together.

~ Despues de cortar ambos lados, decidi cortarle tambien la bastilla del cuello para hacer que quedara sin hombros, pero no le tome fotos a ese paso (oops!)...estoy segura que saben como cortar el cuello de la camiseta =P! Asegurate que no cortes demasiado del cuello, porque si lo haces se te va a resbalar y terminaras mostrando mas de lo que es la intencion!!

Luego, decidi que en vez de trenzar las tiras como lo hacen muchos (porque a mi gusto terminas mostrando mucho mas de lo que me gusta, y aparte es mucho mas dificil) iba a cortar las tiras a la mitad y hacerle nudos.

Then you just tie all of the strands together and voila! you have yourself a shirt!

~ Ahora solo hazle nudos a todas las tiras  y listo! Ya tienes una camisetita super bonita!

This is the finished product and how it looks on.
Be super careful not to tie the strands too super tight, I did and the shirt is now super tight to put on and take off, it could have been a little looser!

~Este es el producto final y como se ve puesto. 

Tienes que tener mucho cuidado de  no atar muy apretado los nuditos, yo los aprete demasiado y esta super dificil de ponerse y quitarse!
